SFBT is a counseling approach that works towards creating a future rather than analyzing the past. It builds conversations around hope, strengths and resources rather than problems and deficits and it allows the client to be completely in charge of the content.
This approach is one that allows counselors to trust that the client already has what it takes to move toward the future they hope for, and SF therapists believe that focusing on what’s already working is more helpful than focusing on what’s not yet working well.
Therapists who use SFBT believe that the client is the expert in the room, not the therapist. Further, these therapists do not believe in ‘resistance’ in clients, but rather they put the onus on themselves as the expert of the process, to find the right questions and do the right things to effectively build the therapeutic relationship so that the client can begin to create the change they hope for.
